Shivapuri National park is one of the nearest national parks that is 12km in the distance from Kathmandu city. This park is situated to the north of Kathmandu Valley at an altitude of 2563m. It was established in 2002 and listed as one of the top ten National parks in Nepal. This park was established with the aim to protect the native species of flora and fauna. Plant in the park includes 129 species of mushrooms while animal consists of 19 species of mammals including beer leopard deer wild boar wildcat and Langur monkeys. Further, it also boasts 177 species of birds and 102 species of butterflies. Several religious sites for the Hindus and the Buddhists lie inside the park.

Drive from Kathmandu to Muhan Pokhari for about 30 minutes. After handling the formalities at the Shivapuri entrance gate, you enter the Shivapuri watershed and wildlife area. You commence your hike from the southern boundary of the area where the army check-post is located. The trail goes along the rugged but drivable road through pine and cherry forests up to Nangi Gompa within one and half hours. Here, a nunnery monastery is located.
After the monastery, the trail goes steeply uphill through the oak, rhododendron and bamboo forests for another three hours. From here you can enjoy the beauty of the snowy Himalaya ranges such as Ganesh Himal, Langtang-Lirung and Dorji Lhakpa. Finally you take a shortcut downhill to Budhanilkantha in about two and half hours before commencing your drive back to Kathmandu.
